Airsoft for Kids: What Age Can They Start, and Is It Safe?

This is the question we get more than any other, usually from a parent standing at the edge of the range while their nine-year-old is already asking. It deserves a proper answer rather than a reassuring noise.

What age can children start?

On a supervised target range like ours, six and up. That is our policy rather than a national rule — there is no single legal minimum age for shooting airsoft at a supervised range in the UK, so every operator sets their own based on their insurance and their risk assessment. You will see anywhere from six to eleven across different providers.

Skirmishing — actual team games where players shoot at each other — is a different activity with different rules, and most UK sites set that considerably higher, commonly eleven or twelve with parental consent.

What the safety setup actually looks like

Rather than telling you it is safe, here is what is physically in place:

• Enclosed lane. The whole range is netted and barriered. Nothing leaves it.
• Eye protection. Provided by us, mandatory inside the range, no exceptions for anybody including spectators in the zone.
• A briefing first. Nobody picks up a replica until they have been told how it works and what the rules are.
• A marshal per shooter. Not supervising from a chair — a trained marshal standing alongside your child for the whole of their turn, hands-on if needed.
• Targets only. Paper and reactive targets downrange. Nobody shoots at another person.
• Low velocity, biodegradable BBs. 6mm plastic, well within the limits that apply to airsoft in the UK.

Does it hurt?

Nothing is being shot at your child, so the honest answer is no. On a target range the only thing being hit is a piece of paper nine metres away. (Skirmishing, where players do shoot at each other, is a different question — there it stings a bit, which is why low-impact games exist for younger players.)

What about the replicas themselves?

They look realistic, and for a lot of parents that is the actual hesitation rather than the physical risk. They are imitation firearms firing plastic pellets, they never leave the range, they are handled only under direct supervision, and they are transported and stored securely. Realistic imitation firearms are regulated in the UK, and organised airsoft activity is precisely the context those rules were written to accommodate.

What to ask before you book

• What is your minimum age, and why that age?
• What is the marshal-to-participant ratio?
• Is eye protection provided, and is it compulsory?
• Can I see your public liability certificate and risk assessment?
• Do I need to stay on site?

Ours: six and up; one marshal per participant; yes and yes; £2 million and a risk assessment issued with every quote; and under-16s need a parent or guardian on site.

Why it is worth doing

Beyond the obvious fun of it, target shooting is one of the few activities where being small, young or unathletic is no disadvantage at all. It rewards patience and concentration. We regularly watch a nine-year-old outshoot their dad, and it is comfortably the best thirty seconds of that child's day.
