Festival Attraction Ideas That Actually Draw a Queue

Programming a field is harder than it looks. You can fill it with things that are perfectly nice and still watch people drift past all of them. The stalls that work have something in common, and it is not budget.

The three things a queue-forming attraction has

1. It is over quickly

Anything that takes twenty minutes per group will have a queue of four people and then no queue at all, because nobody joins a line that is not moving. The attractions that build a crowd turn people over in two or three minutes.

2. You can lose

Participation is fine. Competition is better. The moment there is a score, people take a second go, drag a friend over to beat, and stand around watching other people fail. A face painting stall has customers. A scoreboard has a crowd.

3. It is visible from a distance

If your attraction only makes sense when you are standing in front of it, it will only ever be found by people already walking towards it. Something with a banner, a flag and visible activity pulls people across a field.

Ideas that tend to work

• Target-based attractions — airsoft ranges, archery, axe throwing. Short, scored, visible, and they suit a huge age range.
• Timed challenges — anything with a stopwatch and a leaderboard.
• Skill games with a physical prize — traditional side stalls still work for a reason.
• Demonstrations with participation — falconry, blacksmithing, vehicle displays where people can climb in.

What to check before you book any of them

Whatever you programme, the site file questions are the same. Public liability cover and the certificate to prove it. A written risk assessment for your site, not a generic one. Footprint and access requirements in metres. Power and water needs. Minimum age and supervision ratios. Weather contingency.

A supplier who has these ready without being chased has done a lot of events. One who has to "dig them out" has not.
