Put an AK on a range table next to five other rifles and it is the one people point at. No firearm in history is more widely recognised, and most people recognising it could not tell you anything else about it.
Where it came from
Mikhail Kalashnikov was a Soviet tank commander wounded in 1941. Recovering in hospital, and by his own account preoccupied with how badly outgunned Soviet infantry had been, he began designing small arms. His rifle was adopted by the Soviet Union in 1949 as the Avtomat Kalashnikova.
It fired the intermediate 7.62×39mm cartridge — less powerful than a full battle rifle round, more controllable in automatic fire — which was the correct answer to a question a lot of armies were asking at the time.
Why it spread everywhere
The AK's real genius is not performance. Plenty of rifles shoot straighter. Its genius is tolerance: generous clearances between moving parts, a long-stroke gas piston that shoves the action through dirt and fouling, and a design simple enough to be produced and maintained almost anywhere.
Combine that with decades of Soviet licensing and export, and you get a weapon produced in enormous numbers — the most produced firearm ever made, by a wide margin. The AKM, a lighter stamped-receiver update, arrived in 1959 and accounts for a huge share of what people loosely call "AK-47s".
Kalashnikov's own view
Late in his life Kalashnikov spoke publicly about the unease he felt at what his design had been used for, while maintaining he had built it to defend his country. It is a more complicated legacy than the silhouette on a t-shirt suggests, and worth remembering.
As an airsoft replica
AK replicas are a joy for one specific reason: the ergonomics are honest. The controls are big, obvious and clunky — a huge selector lever on the right side that you sweep with your thumb, a chunky magazine that rocks into place front-first rather than dropping straight in. Everything about handling it feels like the real thing feels, and that is unusual.
They are also front-heavy, which beginners often find helps: the weight settles the muzzle and makes it easier to hold steady on a target. If you have never shot before and somebody offers you the AK, take it.
